Caitlin Smail was born in New York but grew up in London. Her grandfather was the American artist and photographer, Curtis Moffat (See Curtis Moffat: Experimental Photography and Design 1923-1935 at the V&A until end of April 2008, featuring abstract 'photograms', society portraits, and designs for interiors.)

She studied for a diploma in Fine Art at the the Academie de Porte Royale in Paris before going up to New Hall College in Cambridge to read Art History.

In 2004 she graduated from Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London with a BA in Fine Art.

Artist's statement

My current perspective centres on art as a therapeutic outlet for traumatic and repressed memories of events and situations. The complex nature of mortality, loss and emotional trauma often render their expression difficult or impossible because so much is tied-up deep within the subconscious. Using a wide range of media (paint, photography, 3-D construction) and a range of complimentary stimuli (like music, lighting, visual obstruction and work environment) and combining some of the products of these differing media and techniques, I experiment with ways to give voice to the subconscious.

RECENT EXHIBITION:

Music in Mind - until 23rd June

drawing to music

Notations on a Theme

The influence that music has on our state of being, our perception of events and the visions that our imaginations play before our eyes when we relax enough to appreciate them, are all captured here. As if the chords that make up the pieces of music inspiring these images were aggregated over time and processed visually to embody the tones, passions and underlying reasoning that connect the visual, the auditory and the spiritual.
